Wike and the Future of Rivers Politics

By Nwafor Oji Awala

In the ever-shifting terrain of Rivers State politics, one figure continues to cast a long, defining shadow: Chief Nyesom Wike. Whether viewed through the lens of admiration or criticism, his enduring grip on the political machinery of the state is neither accidental nor superficial. It is the product of years of calculated structure-building, unwavering loyalty networks, and an instinctive understanding of how power flows and where it settles.

Wike has never been a passive player. From his days as governor to his current role as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, he has remained deeply embedded in the political bloodstream of Rivers State. His influence is not merely symbolic; it is active, deliberate, and increasingly expansive. The latest development: his endorsement of two governorship contenders across the two dominant political parties, only reinforces what many already suspect: Wike is not just participating in the game; he is redefining its rules.

The endorsement of Dr. Dax George Kelly as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, alongside Rep. Kingsley O.K. Chinda for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is a move that has stirred both intrigue and unease. At face value, it appears contradictory: how does one political heavyweight back candidates in opposing parties? But beneath the surface lies a more sophisticated strategy, one that aligns with Wike’s evolving political doctrine: control the structure, not just the platform.

This dual endorsement speaks directly to the philosophy underpinning what has come to be known as the “Rainbow Coalition.” Far from a mere political slogan, the coalition represents an attempt to transcend traditional party boundaries and consolidate influence across ideological divides. It is a model that prioritizes loyalty, shared interests, and strategic alignment over rigid party affiliation. In Wike’s hands, politics becomes less about party lines and more about power networks.

Dr. Dax George Kelly’s emergence within the APC camp is hardly surprising to those familiar with Wike’s inner circle. A former Commissioner for Works and a technocrat with a reputation for execution, Kelly embodies the blend of competence and loyalty that Wike has consistently rewarded. His candidacy signals a calculated effort to extend influence into APC structures that might otherwise remain outside Wike’s immediate reach.

On the other hand, Rep. O.K. Chinda’s endorsement within the PDP consolidates Wike’s traditional stronghold. As Minority Leader in the House of Representatives and a long-standing ally, Chinda represents continuity, a bridge between Wike’s established political base and the uncertainties of the future. His candidacy is not just about party leadership; it is about preserving a legacy of influence within familiar territory.

For political observers, this is more than a tactical maneuver; it is a masterclass in political hedging. By positioning loyalists in both major parties, Wike effectively ensures relevance regardless of which platform ultimately triumphs. It is a strategy that minimizes risk while maximizing control—a, hallmark of seasoned political operators.

Yet, this approach is not without its implications. Critics argue that such cross-party dominance blurs the lines of democratic competition, raising questions about the autonomy of party structures and the authenticity of internal processes. Supporters, however, counter that it reflects political maturity and adaptability in a system often constrained by rigid partisanship.

Amid these developments, attention inevitably turns to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other emerging power blocs within the state. How they respond to Wike’s expanding influence will significantly shape the contours of the 2027 elections. Will there be resistance, realignment, or reluctant accommodation? The answers remain uncertain, but the stakes are undeniably high.

What is clear, however, is that Wike’s political relevance is far from waning. If anything, it is evolving: becoming more intricate, more strategic, and more far-reaching. The Rainbow Coalition, once dismissed by some as political theater, is gradually taking the form of a formidable force capable of reshaping electoral outcomes.

In Rivers State today, politics is a layered contest of influence, loyalty, and foresight. And at the center of this complex web stands Nyesom Wike, steady, calculating, and, as ever, several moves ahead.

As 2027 approaches, the story of Rivers politics cannot be told without him.
