Wike’s Loyalty Test: Rivers 2027 and the Politics of Control

By Nwafor Oji Awala

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has once again stirred the political waters in Rivers State—this time with a blunt declaration that only absolute loyalty will earn his endorsement ahead of the 2027 governorship race.

Speaking in Abuja while receiving PDP delegates from Rivers State, Wike left no room for ambiguity: any aspirant seeking his backing must be wholly committed to him and his political interests. No compromises. No divided allegiance.

This statement is more than political rhetoric—it is a window into the enduring grip of godfatherism in Rivers politics. Wike’s insistence on total loyalty suggests a determination to avoid a repeat of past political fallouts, particularly his widely publicized rift with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

But beyond personal lessons, the comment raises broader questions about the future of democratic choice in the state. Should leadership be determined by allegiance to an individual, or by accountability to the people?

Wike remains a formidable force, even while serving in an APC-led federal government. His influence cuts across party lines, and his endorsement could significantly tilt the balance in 2027. Yet, his latest remarks underscore a familiar concern: the dominance of political kingmakers over institutional processes.

As Rivers inches toward another election cycle, the stakes are clear. The battle may not just be about who governs—but about who truly holds power.

2027: No Loyalty, No Ticket — Wike Warns Rivers Aspirants

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will only support a governorship candidate in Rivers State who shows complete loyalty to him.

Wike gave the warning in Abuja while hosting PDP delegates from Rivers State ahead of the party’s national convention.

According to sources at the meeting, the former Rivers governor made it clear that he would not repeat past mistakes, stressing that any aspirant seeking his endorsement must be fully committed to him and his political structure.

“I will not make that mistake again. If you want my support, you must be 100 percent loyal—no half measures,” he was quoted as saying.

Wike, who remains a key political figure in Rivers despite serving in the current federal administration, is believed to be sending a strong message to those eyeing the governorship seat in 2027.

Political watchers say his comment may not be unconnected to the ongoing political tension in the state, especially his fallout with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

With his strong influence in Rivers politics, Wike’s endorsement is expected to play a major role in determining who emerges as the next governor.
