Abuja – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday assured Nigerians that the country has “turned the corner” and is on the path of recovery, as the nation marked its 65th Independence anniversary.
In a national broadcast from the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu reflected on Nigeria’s
chequered history since gaining independence from Britain in 1960, acknowledging the sacrifices of its founding fathers while urging citizens to embrace hope and productivity.
“This is the third time I will address you on our Independence anniversary since I assumed office. In the last 28 months, we have made difficult but necessary reforms. The worst is over, I say. Yesterday’s pains are giving way to relief,” the President declared.
Economic Progress
Tinubu highlighted what he described as major economic gains of his administration since 2023, citing a 4.23% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2025, the fastest in four years, alongside a decline in inflation to 20.12%, the lowest in three years.
He listed 12 key economic milestones, including a surge in non-oil revenue which hit ₦20 trillion by August 2025, improved foreign reserves of $42.03 billion, reduced debt-service ratio, and a record trade surplus of ₦7.46 trillion.
The President also noted that oil production has rebounded to 1.68 million barrels per day, while Nigeria has become a net exporter with non-oil exports rising to 48% of trade.
“Our currency has stabilised, our reserves are stronger, and our fiscal health has been restored,” Tinubu said, stressing that funds saved from the removal of fuel subsidy are being redirected into education, healthcare, security, agriculture, and infrastructure.
Security and Youth Development
On security, the President commended the armed forces for “winning the war” against terrorism, banditry, and violent crimes, noting that peace has returned to many communities in the North-East and North-West.
Addressing Nigeria’s youth, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating opportunities, citing initiatives such as the student loan scheme (NELFUND), which has benefitted over 500,000 students, and the YouthCred programme for NYSC members.
“You are the future and the greatest assets of this blessed country. Dream big, innovate, and conquer more territories,” he urged young Nigerians.
A Call to Action
While admitting that Nigerians are still grappling with inflation and high living costs, Tinubu maintained that the alternative to his reforms would have been economic collapse.
“The true measure of success will not be statistics alone but the food on our families’ tables, the electricity in our homes, and the security in our communities,” he said.
He called on citizens and sub-national governments to embrace productivity and patriotism: “Let us be a nation of producers, not just consumers. Let us patronise Made-in-Nigeria goods. Nigeria first.”
Looking Ahead
Concluding his broadcast, Tinubu struck an optimistic note:
“With Almighty God on our side, I can assure you that the dawn of a new, prosperous, self-reliant Nigeria is here. Happy 65th Independence Anniversary, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
