INEC Records Over 69,000 Online Pre-Registrations in Seven Hours as Voter Registration Commences
By John Ollor Obe
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a massive turnout in the opening hours of its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), with 69,376 Nigerians completing their online pre-registration within just seven hours of launch.
According to a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the online portal went live at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and by 3:30 p.m., tens of thousands had pre-registered.
A breakdown of the figures shows that 33,803 (48.7%) of registrants were male, while 35,573 (51.3%) were female. Young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 34 accounted for the majority, with 48,033 registrants, representing 69.2 percent of the total.
The Commission noted that the online registration platform — available round-the-clock at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org — would run alongside the physical registration exercise set to commence on Monday, August 25, 2025. The in-person registration will take place at INEC’s 811 State and Local Government offices across the country from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.
Olumekun emphasized that both online and physical registration would continue simultaneously throughout the CVR period, in line with the schedule earlier released by the Commission. He added that weekly updates on the exercise, including detailed breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability, would be made public.
INEC reminded the public that voter registration is strictly for Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered. The Commission cautioned against double or multiple registration, describing it as a violation of the law. However, transfers of voter registration between and within states, as well as replacements of lost or damaged voter cards, will be allowed during the exercise.
The CVR exercise is part of INEC’s preparations to update the voter register ahead of upcoming elections.
