Prof. Ndowa Lale Leads Peace Drive to Reunite MOSOP: Ogoni Chiefs Council Charts New Course for Unity

By John Ollor Obe.

In a pivotal move to resolve the longstanding leadership crisis within the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers has inaugurated a high-powered Peace Reconciliation Committee—placing Professor Sunday Ndowa E. Lale, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, at the helm of efforts to reunite the fractured movement.

The committee was officially inaugurated on July 15, 2025, under the guidance of HRM (Sir) King Samuel L. A. Nnee JP, AmbP, FIIM, ACArb, D.min, the Gbenemene of Tai Kingdom and Convener of the Supreme Council. With the blessing of the court, the Council has sought to mediate and harmonize leadership disputes that have plagued MOSOP for years.

Prof. Lale, a renowned academic and community leader from Eleme, was appointed Chairman of the reconciliation body—tasked with the monumental responsibility of restoring peace and cohesion to MOSOP, which for decades has been the global voice of the Ogoni cause. Speaking at the event, Prof. Lale described the assignment as “a historic opportunity for healing,” and appealed to all factions and aggrieved individuals to embrace unity.

"We are ready to serve with all sense of duty and commitment," Prof. Lale said. "MOSOP is bigger than any individual interest. The world is watching, and the Ogoni people deserve peace."

The committee includes a distinguished list of members drawn from across Ogoniland and the diaspora, symbolizing inclusivity and a new sense of direction. Other members include:

Prof. Joseph Kinane – Former Acting VC, Ignatius Ajuru University (Khana)

Prof. Friday Sigalo – Retired Dean, RSU (Gokana)

Prof. Clever Gbanador – Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIPORT (Gokana)

Archbishop Abel Serebe Vurasi – Retired Prelate, Christ Army Church Nigeria (Gokana)

Pastor Dr. Moses D. Nsanam – Deeper Life, Rivers East (Khana)

Ven. Saturday T. Nbete – Rector, St. Stephen’s Deanery, Oroazi (Tai)

Chief Lady Goda Chu – Retired Director/Registrar (Eleme)

Chief Keniabaridoo Edoo – Chairman, KAGOTE Diaspora, USA

Elder Dinebari Augustine Kpuinen – President, MOSOP Diaspora, USA

Barr. Paul Nwiado – Legal Practitioner, Secretary (Tai)

The formal inauguration witnessed the presence of respected traditional leaders, including HRH Mene M. Sunday Kabari Nule II; HRH Mene B.Y. Deebom of Bua Kenwigbara III; and HRH King Dr. Amb. Taalor Nwidae Tornwe IV, among others.

Observers say the choice of Prof. Lale as committee chairman is both symbolic and strategic, given his academic stature, credibility, and pan-Ogoni appeal. His leadership is expected to give new impetus to reconciliation efforts and reestablish MOSOP as a unified front for environmental justice, resource control, and self-determination.

With eyes now on the committee's roadmap and the willingness of all factions to cooperate, the Ogoni nation and the broader Niger Delta watch with hopeful anticipation for what could be a turning point in the history of one of Nigeria's most resilient movements.
